 HYDROLYTIC ENZYMES

What are these enzymes & Their Functions

  • These types of enzymes function to breakdown macromolecules (large molecules like proteins, ftas, carbohydrates and nucleic acid) into smaller monomers (amino acids, fatty acids & glycerol, glucose or nucleotides) that our body can absorb into its cells

  • These enzymes imply catalyze hydrolysis reactions in different organs of the body. Each type of enzyme can only work at a specific pH.

Functions & Types of Enzymes

SALIVARY AMYLASE:

  • Salivary amylase breaks down starch into maltose

  • It is made by salivary glands in the mouth where it functions

  • TO FUNCTION IT MUST BE AT THE pH OF 7 (NEUTRAL)
