CELLS- THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF LIFE
Cell Theory
1. ALL living organisms are made up of cells.

2. The cell is the BASIC UNIT of life.
3. All cells come from the DIVISION of pre-existing cells.

Cells
OVERVIEW
-
Cells come in many shapes and sizes (most are microscopic)
-
MOST cells are small (less than 0.001cm)
-
SOME cells are large (ie. chicken eggs, ostrich eggs)
-
-
Human size impacts the number of cells and the size of our cells.
-
Large, tall, and broad humans have more cells than shorter and less built humans.
-
-
Cells carry on all the processes for life, such as reproducing and interacting with both our internal and external environment.
CLASSIFICATION
ALL CELLS ARE MADE UP OF...

-
Cell Membrane: functions to separate the inside of a cell from its external environment and helps regulate what (molecules) enters and leaves the cell as well.
-
Nucleus: contains DNA used to create RNA in order to control all functions in the cell.
-
Organelles: small bodies in a cell that each have a specific function.
-
Cytoplasm: liquid substance that holds the organelles and gives the cell its shape.
Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic Cells
Prokaryotic Cells
-
Include bacteria and blue-green algae
-
Single celled organisms have prokaryotic cells
-
These cells have a lack of a true nucleus and other membrane structures
-
Contents inside the cell are everywhere and are not membrane bound
-
Have a cell membrane and a cell wall BUT DO NOT HAVE MEMBRANE BOUND ORGANELLES WITHIN THEM
-
Have ribosomes and DNA freely moving inside
Eurkaryotic Cells
-
Include plant and animal cells, fungi and protozoa
-
Contain a nucleus and other membrane bound organelles
-
Genetic material (ie. DNA) is bound on chromosomes inside the nucleus
-
Can have cell walls and have cell membranes
-
Multi-celled organisms have eukaryotic cells
